About two months ago I was looking to make this website (elephantintheblog) but I didn’t have the funds to buy hosting for it. Luckily, I came across Host1free on a directory I was browsing. I tell you, I seriously can not believe that I am hosting this website and have two sub domains for free, and with no ads! Everyday I think, there has to be some catch, but there never is. The website is up 99.9% of the time! That is what they advertise, and it’s true. You will get up to 10GB of storage and 150GB of bandwidth! That is more than enough space for a blog or website with no huge downloads (videos, mp3s, etc)! You also get your own cpanel/direct admin! It will feel just like you paid for it! If you want domains, you can link up to 5 of them to your cpanel! There is also webmail and Mysql and PHP support. Along with your hosting, you also get free access to the forum for support and discussions!

Maybe you want to have a website, but you don’t know how to code well enough or how to even begin? Well in your cpanel there will be a free website builder. It has over 380 templates to choose from and you can even install any of 138 applications like Wordpress, Joomla, etc. It’s never been easier to have your own website.

And by popular I mean, well-liked among a majority of the people. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing either. I just know that people would rather have a larger percentage of people that like them, than don’t like them. It makes you feel good about yourself. No, seriously. If you were to go to the mall and have several people come up to you at different times and converse with you, you would probably feel pretty good. Being number 1 at something gets you noticed, which usually leads to a lot of people being interested in you just because you won. So therefore anyone who’s competing for any kind of sport, video game, school project/president, writing/reading/graphics/whatever competition, and fighting, etc wants to be noticed. And everyone likes winning, everyone. No one wants to be picked on, or feel alone. Girls are always competing against each other, we just don’t talk about it. It’s almost like this huge secret that everybody knows. If you say you don’t care what people think, you’re probably not lying. People don’t care what people think of them as long as they are being talked about. Another example for you is people who try to “be different,” or dress out of the ordinary. They are doing it to stand out, to be noticed. The more people talking about them the better. The examples could go on and on, but I won’t bore you.

This is what you want for your blog, too. Why would you start a blog if you didn’t want people to read it? You want your blog to be #1 in search engines (especially Google), have tons of subscribers, and have other bloggers look up to you. So how do you think you get there? It’s pretty much the same as in real life, only you have the possibility of reaching a much wider audience. Be funny, creative, and stand out. In order to do that, just be yourself. Don’t steal ideas from other bloggers even though they are popular. You’ll get there in your own way, but you won’t get there by copying what someone else did. Instead, use other bloggers for inspiration and take their advice, but make it your own. If every blogger blogged about the same thing, why would anyone subscribe to more than one? This is what will distinguish you from the rest of the internet. And don’t be afraid to say that you like to be talked about or well-liked. As long as you aren’t over the top about it, no one really cares. I don’t recommend being a showoff, though. haha.

What are some blogs that stand out the most for you and why?

No, not that kind of traffic. The only good kind of traffic is the kind your website gets and you want a lot of it! When you first create your website, it is basically red and we want green, right? So, I have written this free e-book for you to have some tips on generating free traffic for your website. Pretty much anyone who wants to get traffic to their blog wants one of their posts to be popular enough to get tons of views on social bookmarking websites or lots of people talking about you. I mean, I want this to happen to me, and it did, but not when I expected it to.

A little over a year ago, I was living in NYC and going to School of Visual Arts. This is when I joined Twitter, and apparently I found some luck, because Miramax Films gave me free tickets to see Adventureland just because I tweeted about wanting the torrent for it. I didn’t think anything of the interaction I had with them, but the next day, it was everywhere. How? I have no idea. I didn’t talk about it or anything, so someone on Twitter saw what was going on, and spread it from person to person. I had a couple people ask for me to give an interview for their article and that helped even more. I became a trending topic on Twitter and all I can think now is…. why didn’t I have a website then? Tons of people could have found my website and I literally only had to lift a few fingers for it to happen.

Well, that has nothing to do with making money online, but it does show you the potential popularity you can get OVER NIGHT, and I’m serious. You will probably have to work harder than I did, I only tweeted about 3 times to Miramax, but I want whatever happened that day to happen again, except with my blog. In order to do this, you will need to write interesting posts that people will want to read. Even if it is something that they have read before, which is very likely in my niche, reword everything in to your own voice. People will subscribe to you because they enjoy the way you write and want to read more of it! And since when is that a bad thing? probably hundreds of years ago.

Here are a few tips to help you write a fantastic blog post:

  • Small Paragraphs This is important because it allows your reader to have a break in between every few sentences. Yes, I know, in English you were taught that five to six sentences was the correct amount for a paragraph. I’m almost positive they only tell you that to make sure you write enough. Write whatever you want, however you want, and make it interesting.
  • Headlines are important Before anyone reads anything you’ve written in the actual post, they will look at the headline and decide if they are interested. So basically, you have one sentence to get their attention; make it a good one. Also remember that you should use keywords in headlines!
  • Interaction Leave some way for people to get involved with you. Leave a question for them to answer at the end of your post, not one that only has one correct answer, but something that they could answer about themselves or from experiences. Your readers want to get to know you, and they want you to notice them, too.
  • Images You should always have at least one image in your post. People like picture books for a reason, so give them something pretty to look at. :P
  • Trackbacks You should leave trackbacks for any article or website that inspired your post or is something you want to recommend to your readers. This can lead back to you from other websites, and potentially get you more visitors, but also gives readers a chance to have a second source.
  • Write Lists People love lists. I’m not really sure why, but I had never thought about it before until I started a blog. I confess, I do love lists and I’m willing to bet that you do, too. They are easy to read and don’t have long paragraphs either, usually. Write a list of anything: “5 steps to better living,” “Top 10 Bloggers,” “100 things you didn’t know about jello.”
  • Even if you don’t get your post spread over several websites, if you implement these tips, I am very sure that people will love your posts. There are tons of people blogging all the time, so it is difficult, but if you are willing to work at it, you will see success.

Readers, please tell me about your favorite blog

Giveaways are becoming more and more popular – and there’s a reason. Giveaways attract tons of visitors to your website, because they have the potential to receive something free. Everyone likes free things. Even if you don’t have money to giveaway, create something; there will be people interested in whatever you decide to giveaway.

Another idea for giveaways is to give away a prize to every single person that refers visitors to your website. You can do this on facebook, or twitter, or another social media website. For verification purposes, you could just have the person do a screen shot of them referring people. If you have a lot of people share your giveaway with others, that’s a lot of traffic and potential future customers. Even if it’s just for the duration of the giveaway, you will receive a boost in statistics!

Write an e-book. Writing e-books has become incredibly popular. Just about every blog owner will write an e-book at some point, so that they have something to market to their visitors. If you write one for only giveaway purposes, that could get you traffic, and it doesn’t cost you anything!

Perform a Service – FREE! Are you good at creating blogs? coding? creating WordPress templates? Whatever it is that you’re good at – do it for free for a week. This will get you a lot of trust, because you have people to rate your service, and also more visitors who are interested in your free service! If they don’t get a chance to get your help, they are still more likely to purchase your help in the future.

Visitor Referrals Remember how I mentioned giving away something free to each person that refers you to more people? You could also give them more entries to the contest for every referral they give. It’s free, and easy to do.

Photo Contests Get your subscribers, and others, to enter pictures for a contest and then narrow it down to ten or so, and put it on your blog for visitors to vote. This will cause the people who are up for nomination to tell others to vote for them, which means they are spreading the word about your site!

These are just some ideas and just a few of the benefits of a giveaway. If you put a lot of effort into the giveaway, you will see phenomenal results, as opposed to just some effort, and good results. Remember to reward the winners, because that will build trust in you which could lead to more sales! Host a giveaway on your site and see what happens!

Link building is probably the most important part of getting traffic to any website. It is important to get the name of your website out there so that new visitors can find your website if they have never heard of it. So I am pretty sure just about every person reading this is determined to get a lot of new traffic to boost their subscribers and daily visitors, as well. Even as I write this, I am planning to do some link building later today. However, I want to share some tips with all of you so you can maximize your potential!

  • 1. People love lists. This is a fact. If you make a list about the five best ways to straighten your hair or something, I guarantee that there will be several people who bookmark it. It may have something to do with it being laid out and broken down for them.
  • 2. Write articles with tips. Another thing people like tips on how to do things better than they already are, or maybe even EASIER.
  • 3. Write Articles on well established article sites. Places like EzineArticles, GoArticles, iSnare, etc. The great thing about good article sites is that their article pages actually rank highly and send highly qualified traffic.
  • 4. Free Directories. Submit your site to free directories, such as: DMOZ.
  • 5. Tag related sites on sites like Del.icio.us. If people find the sites you tag to be interesting, engaging, or just overall liked something about your suggestions, they may follow the trail back to your site.
  • 6. Write about Trending Topics. If you write about topics that are currently getting a lot of comments and people talking about it online, then you are more likely to get more link backs and people who are interested in what you are writing.
  • 7. Launch an affiliate program. Most of the links you pick up will not have SEO value, but the added exposure will almost always lead to additional links.
  • 8. Depending on your niche, you will find Craigslist to be a free classified service.
  • 9. Submit a story to Digg that links to an article on your site.
  • 10. Most forums allow members to leave signature links or personal profile links. If you make good contributions, people will follow these links and potentially read your site and link at your site.
  • 11. Reviews can rank well.
  • 12. Review relevant products on Amazon. We have seen this draw in direct customer inquiries and secondary links.
  • 13. Review related sites on Alexa to draw in traffic streams.
  • 14. Start a blog. Not just because you want one because you think they’re cool. Post regularly and post great content. Good execution is what gets the links.
  • 15. Link to other blogs from your blog. Outbound links are one of the cheapest forms of marketing available. Many bloggers also track who is linking to them or where their traffic comes from, so linking to them is an easy way to get noticed by some of them.
  • 16. Comment on other blogs. Most of these comments will not provide much direct search engine value, but if your comments are useful, insightful, and relevant they can drive direct traffic. They also help make the other bloggers become aware of you, and they may start reading your blog and/or linking to it.
  • 17. If you create a blog make sure you list it in a few of the best blog directories.
  • 18. Swap some links. But only on a small scale, and with relevant partners that will send you traffic. Stay away from the link trading hubs and networks.
  • 19. Rent some high quality links from a broker. Text Link Ads is a good website for this.
  • 20. Rent some high quality links directly from Web sites.
  • 21. Become a sponsor.
  • 22. Hold a contest. Contests really attract people because they are interested in winning!
  • 23. Build a tool. People like things like generators and such. They get a lot of link shares.
  • 24. Offer free samples in exchange for feedback.
  • 25. Release a Firefox extension.
  • These are just a few things you can do, obviously the list of ways to get more traffic is much, much longer, but I also have some tips for things you shouldn’t do, because they are a waste of time.

  • 1. Do not submit your site to tons of directories you pay for. These sites most likely won’t get you any traffic. I mean, honestly, how many people really use directories? Especially out of the tons of ones out there, many of them are probably not very popular.
  • 2. Sign up for profiles on forums you never intend on commenting on.
  • 3. Start marketing your own site hard on your first blog comment. Add no value to the comment section. Carpet bomb dozens of blogs with this message.
  • 4. Steal content published by well known names.
  • 5. Send a webmaster an email every single day asking for them to link to your website.
  • Basically, just think about what you’re doing before you do it. Don’t waste your time doing stuff that isn’t going to get you anywhere. Interact with the internet and put yourself out there, and you will get exposure. Get your NAME out there. Make your website worth linking to; you want your visitors to keep returning to your site! I hope this will help you, and your website, grow to bigger and better things. Keep working and your hard work will pay off. Trust me.
